Discover Fresno!

Yosemite National park is the one national park that started it all. With the help of John Muir and the foresight of Teddy Roosevelt, Yosemite has been saved from the developers hammer for us all to enjoy. Located 2 ½ hours from Fresno, Yosemite is certainly worth a visit.

There are a few highlights that you must see on your dive up from Fresno. Yosemite covers a lot of acreage and with traffic sometimes at a bottleneck it helps if you know where to go. We have created a small list for day-trippers on the essentials to take along with you. Follow this link to find our Yosemite daytripping list.

Hikes/Walks

  1. Bridalveil Falls – Look for the parking area at the beginning of Hwy 41 (Wawona rd) in Yosemite Valley. The half mile hike to the falls overlook is a great, and easy hike.
  2. Yosemite Falls – From winter to mid-summer these falls are in all their glory. One of the world’s tallest water falls, Yosemite Falls is your first priority. Yo can walk to the lower falls ( there are three) in short order and is an easy .5 mile hike on pavement. Trail starts across from the Yosemite Lodge.
  3. Mirror Lake – This picturesque lake is a short, 2 mile/1hour hike along the valley floor. The lake turns into a meadow in the late summer, so don’t be disappointed if that is what you find ;).
  4. Valley Floor loop – Starting at the Lower Yosemite Falls shuttle bus stop (or anyplace in between) this grand walking tour of the valley should not be missed. It will take you around 2 to 4 hours to complete this hike, but is well worth it in my mind.

Rock formations

  1. Half Dome – This is Yosemite! Half Dome can be seen from just about every part of the Valley, so finding a great vantage point is up to you.
  2. El Capitan – This magnet for rock climbers rises over 3,000 ft form the valley floor and is the largest granite monolith in the world. Best to park by Bridalveil Falls and take the short walk over. There are also a couple of pullouts that offer great photo ops.
  3. Cathedral rocks – Opposite El Capitan, Cathedral rocks are more impressive (some say) than El Cap itself.
  4. Glacier Point – This point, located above the valley is a car trip for most and a great hike for a very select group. The views are amazing and should not be missed.

Other sights

  1. The Giant Sequoais – Since you are coming to the park viw Hwy 41 from the Fresno area, you should stop by and see the big trees. Most of these trees are located in Sequioa/King Canyon National park to the south but Yosemite has its own grove. Look for the signs of the Mariposa Grove along 41 near the park’s south entrance.
