Sequoia Kings Canyon National Parks

Sequoia Kings Canyon National parks are two national parks a short distance from Fresno. Both parks are home not only to some of the largest living things on earth but also one of the most picturesque canyons in the country. These parks were created seperatly, Sequoia was the second National park and the General Grant national park (now Kings Canyon) was third. With elevations ranging from 1,500' to 14,491' you can be assured that there is alot to see!

If you are looking for a drive tour or quick visit take the Generals Hwy through the park(s). This road climbs over 5000' in elevation and takes you through the chaparrel and live oak studded foothills, up into the pine forest and the home of the Giant Sequoia redwoods. From here you can not only explore that high alpine wilderness that is at your doorstep, but the subterranean caverns (there are over 200!) that lie below your feet.

If you are looking for more information on the specific parks please click the link at the beginning of the first paragraph. If you would like to see or quick guide see below.

Drives/Hikes/Walks

  1. The Giant Sequoais – There are a couple of groves of these trees that are worthy of a stop.
    • Grant Grove - Home to the General Grant tree, our national Christmas tree.
    • Big Stump basin - a reminder of what can happen if places like this go unprotected.
    • Cedar Grove (Kings Canyon) - A rival to Yosemite, as John Muir stated.

All these trees can be found off of Hwy 180 out of Fresno or Hwy 198 from Visalia. These two routes can be combined into one big loop, offering you a chance to see all these parks have to offer!

Visitors Centers

  1. Lodgepole/Giant Forest Visitors center - Home to the Giant Forest and information on the northern park of Sequoia National park. There are plenty of day hiking trails here and one that leads to Crystal Cave, a mable cavern like no other.
  2. Ash Mountain Visitors center - Located in the Sierra foothills, the Ash Mountain VC is a far cry from the mountain a few miles away. This is the headquarters for both parks and offers easy access to the spur road leading to Crystal Cave.

Other sights

  1. Mineral King - This open glacial canyon is one of the more picturesque and awe inspiring places in the Sierra. The road in here is slow-going, but you do not need to be in a hurry here. Great hiking, alping fishing and camping all can be had, just bring along some warm clothes. The road was build in 1879 as a mining road, and you will see alot of California's history along the way.
